![]() Hailing from Rochester, NY, Greg Fair found his home in traditional American music some years ago now. And it seems his life has come full circle. One of his earliest memories is of getting up early on Sunday mornings to listen to the weekly Top 25 Countdown on the local country music station in Rochester.
Greg began playing clarinet in fourth grade and stuck with it until marching/pep band came along. While he loved the clarinet, he had to escape the endless renditions of "Hang on Sloopy" and "You Can Call Me Al" so he quit band. But at this time Greg picked up the guitar and his love affair with stringed instruments began. He started learning the mandolin as a sophomore in college and joined a bluegrass band right away. The light bulb officially went on when Greg attended his first old-time concert. The heavy rhythm and syncopation, the joy and loneliness, and the organic nature of old-time music all made sense to him. Greg went on to become one of the founding members of The Varnish Cooks, an old-time stringband. They traveled the Northeast and released two acclaimed full-length recordings. Greg has also performed with The Burning Boots and toured Australia with Pigeonwing Strings. In 2009, Greg released a full-length CD, "Tell You More Lies." |
